A Brand New Flag

Friday, June 20, 2025, 5–7 pm

In observance of Juneteenth, Hillyer is hosting a celebratory event to honor the art and life of Avis Robinson. Since the official holiday falls on “Third Thursday,” Hillyer will feature a special program the following day that includes a guided tour, a hands-on artmaking activity, and a scavenger hunt gallery guide that explores various topics related to the exhibition “From Fabric to Paint: Funk, Soul, and the Art of Avis Robinson.”

A Salon Talk with Eugene Robinson

Thursday, June 26, 6 to 8 pm

The Millennium Arts Salon will host a salon talk with Eugene Robinson, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and former associate editor of the Washington Post. Inspired by the exhibition, From Fabric to Paint: Funk, Soul, and the Art of Avis Robinson, Eugene Robinson will share his personal thoughts and reflections about his life-long companion, Avis Collins Robinson, and her passion for art, education, and African American history. Robinson was renowned for her evocative paintings and quilts that delved into themes of race, gender, oppression, and history, capturing the richness of African American life and the broader human experience.

Avis Robinson Papa’s Got a Brand New Flag 2017 Fabric (blue jeans, flannel, shirts) 88 x 72.5 in “Papa’s Got a Brand New Flag” draws inspiration from James Brown's 1965 funk classic Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. In Brown's original song, he narrates the story of an older man summoning the courage to return to the dance floor. The term "brand new bag" is slang for adopting a new interest, taste, or approach. In revising the title from “bag” to “flag,” Robinson expands the political context, asking the viewer to consider what it means to be a citizen of the United States. Eugene Robinson—“Papa’s Got a Brand New Flag”
Avis Robinson Mad Slaves in a Field of Cotton 2014 Mixed media, acrylic 62.5 x 98 x 4 in Throughout her life, Robinson was passionate about collecting African American historical objects and documents. Within her collection of nearly 3,000 objects are rare photographs of enslaved people and an Eli Whitney cotton gin. These artifacts were the inspiration for Mad Slaves in a Field of Cotton, which shows individuals forced to pick cotton. From Fabric to Paint Funk, Soul, and the Art of Avis Robinson curated by Timothy Brown and Katie Larson, PhD Location: IA&A at Hillyer June 7–29, 2025 Avis Collins Robinson was an artist, activist, and environmentalist with a passion for African American history. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Cross in 1971 and received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1974. She later earned two Master’s degrees, the first from Golden Gate University and the second, an M.P.A., from Harvard University in 1988. For 20 years, Robinson worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she conducted early research on climate change. In 2003, she continued the legacy of the Washington Metropolitan Scholars program, a non-profit organization that connected 50 of the nation’s leading universities to high-achieving minority students in the Washington metropolitan area. During this period, Robinson also became an avid collector of African American historical artifacts and documents, a portion of which are now in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2008, Robinson began to devote most of her time to creating art with fabric and paint. Building on her earlier relationship with the Gee’s Bend quilters, Robinson developed a pictorial language of her own, which was later recognized through her commissioned portrait of Lincoln for the Ford’s Theatre. She was later awarded a residency at the Studios of Key West, and a solo exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art. Further recognition came through her association with the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies (FAPE). Robinson donated quilts which are on display at U.S. Embassies in New York, London, and Moscow. In 2023, FAPE commissioned her to create a series of eight quilts for each elevator bank at the new U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam.
